Research topic Continued

Three influential people in my life that helped me become more interested in the healthcare profession.  The first person would be a lady at my church who is an actual nurse practitioner.  I have talked with her a little bit and she has helped me come to understand the basics and more in depth of the job. Along with all the medical issues in my family that I would like to learn more about.  People such as my auntie, and my grandma and i would love to be able to assist them more with their medical problems.

Three important dates are: 1881 – Clara Barton becomes the first President of the American Red Cross, which she founded, on May. 21.  1901 – New Zealand is the first country to regulate nurses nationally, with adoption of the Nurses Registration Act on September 12.  1902 – New York City Board of Education hires Lina Rogers Struthers as North America’s first school nurse.  All of these dates seem to be self explanatory.  They have had an impact on the history of Nurses everywhere.  Without these important events healthcare and Nurses would not be where it is today.

Three controversies are: The author critiques the dialectic between justice-based ethics and an ethic of caring from a historical perspective (by analogy with the dialectic between agape and friendship). Justice-based ethics have been problematic for nursing because of the contextualization approach. The ethic of caring is problematic because caring, being contextual, is particularistic and therefore can be based on morally irrelevant factors, such as liking. At the forefront of strikers' concerns were nurse-to-patient staffing ratios, benefit cuts, and of course, salaries.   The union-based actions were not long, usually only 24-hours, but they did disrupt normal business and they did garner national attention.  All three of these controversies are still on going debates.  No one has been able to agree yet but they are all important to any one interested in nursing.  They will soon come to an end and have a decision on these issues.
